INTRODUCTION

I used a poster designed by Mitsuo Katsui as the starting point for this project. I re-imagined it as one piece within a series of pieces that share the same format and that together form a visual system. To develop the other pieces in the series, I began by analyzing each and every element and quality of the original poster, for example, the shape, size, texture, color, and position of individual elements and overall compositional structure, color palette, and typefaces. I found that the pattern on the original poster consists of incomplete squares intersect perfectly. I applied this pattern to my design with different geometric shapes.

A NEW visual system

Many contemporary applications of visual systems—like branding and advertising campaigns—demand systems that generate coherent outcomes not only across multiple iterations, but also across multiple scales, formats, and media technologies. The next step of this project is to create a system that works across multiple formats, while still effectively balancing consistency and variation.

Based on the poster I created, I decided to create a new system featuring the hexagon without a corner. The pictures below show my process of working, type treatment of the system and an animated gif.

I also applied the visual system to 1” diameter, circular buttons. This format let me reduced my system to an iconic form that encapsulates the feel of the system in a distinctive, recognizable design at small scale.
